Broken Wings

Broken Wings is the latest novel to be checked off my to be read list, which grows faster than I can keep up with. Anybody else have that problem? This is book one in a two part series called Broken Wings Books.

My wife is an avid V.C. Andrews fan, and she is the one who suggested her books for me, and I decided I would give them a try. Her goal is to read all of them by the end of the year, which is no small task! My goal is to read all of Joyce Carol Oates’ books. Do you have an author where your goal is to read everything they’ve written? I’d love to hear who it is!

I decided to give these books a try, and see if they were worth the hype. My husband and I also just finished listening to the Lord of the Rings series, andI ended up loving that. It is so much fun being in both relationships where my wife and husband are such avid readers, and I can share that with both of them. It keeps things fun and interesting.

Have you read Broken Wings? Come on in and let me tell you about it!

About Broken Wings

Three girls from different worlds with one thing in common: They were born to be wild.

Robin… With a mom who’s more absorbed in her singing career than in her own daughter, Robin’s left to her own devices when the two move to Nashville. That’s where her mom hopes to strike gold—and where Robin finds nothing but trouble.

Teal… This rich girl will do anything to get her parents’ attention…even break the law. But after she takes things too far for the guy she adores, Teal loses their trust completely—and is treated like a prisoner in her own home. Now there may be only one way out.

Phoebe… She’s the girl from the wrong side of the tracks, trying to make it in a fast new crowd. She moved in with her aunt to make a fresh start. But now her biggest mistake may be to trust a charming rich boy who could ruin her life and destroy her reputation forever.

Thoughts on Broken Wings

Robin

“My mother didn’t want me. My grandparents forced me down her throat, and she never stops throwing that back at them. How would you like living in such a solid, religious, and loving home?”

V.C. Andrews, Broken Wings

Robin’s story was one that I wanted to have a happier ending than it did. I have a feeling that isn’t an actual thing in any of V.C. Andrews books, but I certainly hoped. Given that I was raised by a narcissist, I understood Robin and some of her emotions and choices.

My biggest complaint here is that it was predictable. You can see the outcome of everything going to hell in a handbasket from a mile away.

I’m hoping that the next two segments are better. Or at the very least, more entertaining. Because there hasn’t been a likable character in this story yet. Again, I’m not sure V.C. Andrews ever writes likable characters, but I can certainly hope.

Teal

“Should I tell her? Could I ever tell her? How do you tell your own mother that what you want the most is simply to be loved?”

V.C. Andrews, Broken Wings

This portion of the book actually hurt my soul to read. Being raised in a home without love is something that will follow people through their adult lives, and it will be a constant battle. I feel bad for Teal, because she had everything… except love. That was the one thing she needed, and wasn’t given.

It is really easy to see why she acts out all the time and can’t quite be successful at anything. Yet her parents can’t see it.

Phoebe

“It was no surprise to anyone, least of all to me, that for me family was as fictional a concept as Oz.”

V.C. Andrews, Broken Wings

This story was the worst out of the three. I found myself bored, and often skimming parts of it, as I just wanted it to be over so that I could start reading the second book in the series, Midnight Flight.

I struggled to relate to any of the characters in this story, or their experiences. It just fell flat for me, especially in comparison to the first two sections about Robyn and Teal. The only thing that really caught my attention was when she was taken to the “school” because I could only imagine her fear and anxiety, given it felt like she was being kidnapped.

Final Thoughts on Broken Wings

I’m calling Broken Wings a four star read. This was a hard book to read, because I actually felt bad for the characters, at least two out of the three. This surprised me. After reading My Sweet Audrina, I felt nothing but contempt for the main characters. In this case, it was different. Their struggles were so relatable and real.

I found myself having to take breaks with this one. I borrowed it from my local library, and I checked it out at least twice, if not three times while reading it.

It will certainly be interesting to see where the second book in the series goes, as the story continues. I always hope for happy endings, but we will certainly find out soon enough if I get that wish or not. Stay tuned for my review of the second book in the series, Midnight Flight.

About the Author

Broken Wings author V.C. Andrews

V. C. Andrews (Cleo Virginia Andrews) was a twentieth century American novelist. Her forte was gothic horror fiction blended with family saga. She is famous for her notoriously bestselling work Flowers in the Attic (1979).

Andrews was born on June 6, 1923 in Portsmouth, Virginia. She was the only daughter and youngest child in the Andrews household. As a child she had a falling accident and she suffered from crippling arthritis in the aftermath of her surgery. However, she had not lost hope as she completed her studies from home. She then started her career as an illustrator and an artist.

She made an attempt at writing with a science fiction novel, named Gods of Green Mountain but failed to have it published. Then she penned a novel, titled The Obsessed for which the publishers suggested her to develop the plot and make it more electrifying. Overnight she edited her work and resubmitted it with the title Flowers in the Attic. Its publication in 1979 brought her huge praise and success as a fiction writer as it instantly became bestselling debut novel of hers.

Subsequently, Flowers in the Attic became the Dollanganger Series owing to its raging success. The first book is a psychodrama centered on the Dollanger family whose head of the family dies in an accident which leaves the mother and her four children financially helpless.

Andrews’ idea of a good novel was that it be fast-paced. She was of the view that she only finishes those books that hold her interest long enough and keeps her guessing till the end. Therefore, while writing a book she minded the fact that her readers do not feel lost in the details but it incited the urge in them to find out what was about to happen.

V. C. Andrews’s other famous works include, The Casteel series (1985), The Cutler series (1990), The Landry series (1994), The Logan series (1996), The Orphans series (1998), The Wildflowers series (1999) and many more. Her works have been translated into many other languages. She suffered from breast cancer in her last days and died on December 19, 1986 at the age of 63. The success of her career had her estate hire a ghostwriter after her death. Andrew Neiderman ghostwritten numerous stories under her name.
