Anomaly
Anomaly is the latest short story to be checked off my to be read list. If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know how much I love a good short story. It is much better than mindlessly doom scrolling social media.
I was excited to start this one, as I’ve never heard of the author, and thought finding something new would be fun. I’m always looking to expand away from my favorite authors and discover new ones.

About Anomaly
What if you had to choose: to be erased and save the world… or to live and let it burn.
What if every day you woke up as someone new?
Every day a new past, every day a new life.
Except for one thing: always the same love.
Then what if one day you woke up and you were no one at all?
Ellie Coleman has been erased from existence and now she must fight for the love that no longer knows her and the life that is no longer her own.
What if you had to choose: to be erased and save the world… or to live and let it burn.
Thoughts on Anomaly
This story starts out strong. Our main character sees things constantly changing. Think about the horse of a different color from Wizard of Oz type changes. But then it abruptly ends and I’m still not sure where it takes me from there.
The biggest problem I had with this short story is it made no sense to me. It was the equivalent of trying to follow a directionally challenged squirrel on crack, in the dark, at a rave.
But also time travel and dystopian type stories aren’t really a favorite genre of mine. So that may definitely play a part in my lackluster opinion.
Thankfully it was a short story, so I didn’t have to fight my way through it for too long. But it was still a struggle because it severely lacked cohesion. It is a lot like trying to follow a recipe that is written in the wrong order, and it is a struggle to know where you are, or be able to envision the end product.
Final Thoughts on Anomaly
I’m calling Anomaly a three star read, because thankfully it was short. But it was still a challenge to read, and by the time I publish this review, I will have forgotten everything I read. I wanted so much more. I wanted it to be memorable, to keep me on the edge of my seat, and to make an impact and be memorable. But it didn’t reach there, and I found that disappointing.
There are times I am grateful for my book blog, because it serves to jog my memory about certain books and stories I’ve read and forgotten about. This one is definitely falling into the already forgotten category.
As with every book I review, I always encourage my readers to read and form your own opinions, as you may end up loving this short story. But it simply wasn’t for me.
This was the first story from author Jennifer Milne that I’ve read, and it will likely remain exactly that for the foreseeable future. There are just too many other books to read and try first on my to be read shelf.
