Leather and Lark
Leather and Lark is the latest novel to be checked off my to be read list. It is book two in a three part series from author Brynne Weaver.
Prior to reading Butcher and Blackbird, I had never heard of Brynne Weaver before. But after reading it, I was hooked and knew I had to read Leather and Lark next.

“When Thomas proposed to me with this ring, it was the happiest day of my life. But I was naive, of course. I knew nothing about how to build a successful marriage. It took a while to learn that being in love is not enough. Chasing love is what it takes.”

About Leather and Lark
“I don’t just want to hear her laugh, I need to earn it. Every time I gain a little ground, I want more. I want to break out of the shade and back into her light. Without even realizing it, I’ve become addicted to it. To her.”
Brynne Weaver, Leather and Lark
Contract killer Lachlan Kane wants a quiet life working in his leather studio and forgetting all about his traumatic past. But when he botches a job for his boss’s biggest client, Lachlan knows he’ll never claw his way out of the underworld. At least, not until songbird Lark Montague offers him a deal: use his skills to hunt down a killer and she’ll find a way to secure his freedom. The catch? He has to marry her first.
And they can’t stand each other.
Indie singer-songwriter Lark is the sunshine and glitter that burns through every cloud and clings to every crevice that Lachlan Kane tries to hide inside. The surly older brother of her best friend’s soulmate, Lachlan thinks she’s just a privileged princess, but Lark has plenty of secrets hiding in the shadows of her bright light. With her formidable family in a tailspin and her best friend’s happiness on the line, she’s willing to make a vow to the man she’s determined to hate, no matter how tempting the broody assassin might be.
As Lachlan and Lark navigate the dark world that binds them together, it becomes impossible to discern their fake marriage from a real one. But it’s not just familiar dangers that haunt them.
There’s another phantom lurking on their doorstep.
And this one has come for blood.

Thoughts on Leather and Lark
“Oh my God, what am I doing? I’ve literally lost my mind. I’m marrying Lachlan Kane, Boston’s biggest asshole. This is probably crazier than blowing someone up with fireworks.”
Brynne Weaver, Leather and Lark
I’ll be the first to admit that in the beginning of Leather and Lark, I fully expected to hate it. It made me laugh a couple of times, but nothing fabulous. If you’re feeling this way, just keep going. Because it gets better. Like soooo much better!
I got the audiobook version for my wife, and then got really mad when she finished it before me. I also found myself texting my bestie about different things in the book, and I’m like, dude, you need to read Butcher and Blackbird so you can move onto this one. It’s just that good. Then I would also send him random texts with the stuff I was reading that Lark did.
I was really surprised that Leather and Lark made me feel a lot of emotions. Some characters were kind of boring, but others were amazing. I loved Lark’s aunt Ethel. She was amazing, and that favorite outlandish aunt we’ve all known. Where you have no clue what she’s going to say, if she’s crazy, or just really likes to stir the pot, with a touch of brilliance thrown in there.
“There is no practiced smile, no facade to keep others from being inconvenienced by my emotions. I’m in pain and I look like I’m hurting. I’m in love and I look like I’m living. I like the woman looking back at me. I think my aunt would be proud of her too.”

Rose is another character we meet in both novels, and will get to see a lot more of her in Scythe and Sparrow, which I’m looking forward to. We’ve only had glimpses of her and Fionn so far, but I want so much more. But what I really love about Rose is how loyal and deep her friendship with Lark becomes, and how much she cares.
After I finished reading it, I was talking to my wife about it, and said that I liked this one more than Butcher and Blackbird, and she agreed with me. Glad I’m not the only one! Reading other reviews though, I was surprised at how many people didn’t enjoy Leather and Lark as much as Butcher and Blackbird. They are both amazing, but had such different feels to them.
I loved seeing so much more of Lark, but also watching her grow into herself and becoming a pretty amazing woman. When you don’t have to pretend to be someone you’re not, when you can just be a mess and still be loved, you know you’ve found your person. She absolutely found that in Lachlan. Which is something I simply love seeing, and something that isn’t mentioned or made a point of in nearly enough books. That you are absolutely enough just as you are.

Final Thoughts on Leather and Lark
“Lark sets the toolbox down on the table and rests a hand on the lid as she turns to pin her glare to the trembling man at the end of my gun. My beautiful wife. An angelic devil, so wickedly innocent, her sweet and welcoming features contrasted by the lethal coldness in her crystalline eyes.”
Brynne Weaver, Leather and Lark
This is a definite five star read for me. I’ve been gushing about it ever since I was half way through the book, and now I think everyone should read it.
My biggest complaint here is that Sparrow and Scythe hasn’t been released yet. Because I want to read it so badly, and it feels like I may die while impatiently waiting for it to be released. Not really, I’m not that dramatic, but I’m not exactly patient either.
This trilogy is the first from author Brynne Weaver that I’ve read, but I can definitely say that I’ll be reading more of her books in the near future.

Discussion
Have you read Leather and Lark or any other writing from author Brynne Weaver? Are you a fan? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
About the Author

Brynne is a fan of velociraptors, the Alien movies (well, most of them), red wine, and wild adventures. She can relate nearly anything you say to a line from the movie Hot Fuzz. She has been trying unsuccessfully for years to convince her husband that they should acquire a pet mink to add to their menagerie of animals (what could possibly go wrong with that plan?!).
When not busy writing, Brynne can be found with her husband and son on their family farm in NS, Canada, or enjoying her other passions which include riding horses, reading, motorcycling, and spending time with family and friends around a raclette and a bottle of wine.
