Stripped Down at the Fair

Stripped Down at the Fair is the latest short story from author Lilah Hart to be checked off my to be read list. This is a standalone story from Lilah Hart, but also part of a six story series from multiple authors. It can be read either way, as a standalone or part of the overall series as well. In my case, I’m choosing to read it as a standalone at the moment, because I want to focus on Lilah Hart stories.

I’ve only recently discovered Lilah Hart and her short stories, but I’ve been thoroughly enjoying them since I started. They all seem to be available via Kindle Unlimited as well, making them easily accessible to me, and other readers who utilize this subscription service.

I’ve been a little bit more obsessed with short stories lately, and I often find that to be the case in the summer. It is warmer, my attention span is shorter, and I’m busier. Life gets in the way of my reading at times. I’m also the kind of person who takes my Kindle everywhere with me, as there are always opportunities to read.

I’ve found that short stories like Stripped Down at the Fair are simply perfect for when I’m bored and standing in line for coffee, or have unexpected delays, and really just anytime I would pull out my phone to mindlessly doom scroll social media. I’ve started reading instead. I love replacing social media time with reading instead. It is just healthier, and good for the soul, if I’m being perfectly honest here.

About Stripped Down at the Fair

One gust of wind. One unexpected spark. She’s only in town for the fair, so why does leaving him feel impossible?

How can a man make even a caricature look hot?

That’s what I’m wondering as I draw the guy repairing the broken-down ride across from me. I’m at the fair to make some money drawing fun pictures of people. But suddenly, I can’t concentrate on work.

When a strong wind blows my drawing straight over to the guy, I’m mortified. But he’s amused. And the next time I see him, he asks me to have lunch with him.

It can only be temporary, though. I live four hours away, and I can’t afford to move to this small town. But walking away from this guy when the fair is over will be the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Thoughts on Stripped Down at the Fair

“And if you need my help scandalizing your family, I’m here for you.”

Lilah Hart, Stripped Down at the Fair

I have to admit that I was a bit bored when I first started this story, as I really didn’t know where it was leading. It took a little bit to really get into and enjoy. But then again, I haven’t researched anything about it before starting it. I went in blind, and I actually ended up loving that fact. Sometimes that really is the best way to go about a new story. This is especially true if you’re becoming very familiar with a specific author’s writing, as I’m rapidly becoming with Lilah Hart.

I found the characters to be cute. Cate came to the fair to sell caricatures and Dustin was there to fix a ride. Neither of them expected to find their forever along the way, but they did. Their first “date” was cute. Awkward, funny, and really cute. It was relatable the way Cate was worried about silly things and overthinking it.

I found it was a good, simple, and quick read. It entertained me, and I enjoyed it. But it wasn’t anything too deep or profound. I’ve enjoyed the Wildwood Valley Brides series far more. But I’m also comparing Lilah Hart’s writing now.

Final Thoughts on Stripped Down at the Fair

I’m calling Stripped Down at the Fair a solid four star read. It was cute, fun, and entertaining. Which is exactly what it was meant to be. But it wasn’t my absolute favorite either, because I really wasn’t invested in the characters.

I still highly recommend you give this story, and any of Lilah Hart’s writing a chance. If you want a good short story, she is definitely a great author to deliver that to you.

Lilah Hart is quickly becoming a repeat author here in my blog, and for good reason. If you’re ever in a reading slump, short stories like this are absolutely the most perfect way to bring you out of it. It happens, even to me, and I really appreciate when I can feel accomplished by reading a short story and remembering why I enjoy reading so much.
