Bazaar

Bazaar is the latest novel to be checked off my to be read list. It is Miles Joyner’s debut novel, and is called a techno thriller. What is a techno thriller? I had the same question! It is a thriller story where technology is a significant element of the plot. Depending on the story, it overlaps with other thriller genres such as military, political, conspiracy thrillers, or science fiction.

I will be the first to admit that I’ve never read any book in the techno thriller genre, so I was certainly curious about Bazaar and what it was about. I love trying out new books and genres that I don’t normally read. This is actually how I discovered Ryan Hyatt’s books and he became a repeat author in my blog. Sometimes I am even surprised when I find a book or author I absolutely love reading that I wouldn’t have expected, just based on the genre they write.

About Bazaar

A high-profile homicide of a former ambassador’s son in the nightlife district of the nation’s capital gets connected to an assassination market on the dark web, turning the DC area into a battlefield over a new generation of class warfare.

When the ex-diplomat, Chiedu Attah, hires an elite executive protection team headed by siblings Yemi and Karen Uzunma to guarantee his safety, the security firm realizes they are going up against a young, inventive contract killer who is determined to finish off the political VIP by any means necessary.

Thoughts on Bazaar

When I started Bazaar, I had to go looking to research and figure out what exactly the techno thriller genre is, and if there were other authors who had written it. There are, and I’ve heard of them, most notably, Michael Crichton, Tom Clancy, Andy Weir, and Daniel Suarez. Although I’ve never read any of their books, I just know their names. So this was a new experience for me.

Bazaar starts out a little bit difficult to get into and enjoy. This comes from having multiple points of view in a short span, and it is hard to keep track of who is who. It reminded me a lot of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, in that it came across written more like a screenplay than a novel. I was prepared to dislike it. But I was judging it far too early. Sometimes I lack patience, and it always comes back to bite me, especially with books.

But it gets better! Trust me when I say to just keep reading. It will get much better and easier to read. I love when I hit the point where I am driven to just keep reading and want to read the entire thing. I found the same when I read Fox by Joyce Carol Oates. It was seriously hard to start, but then there is that point where I was driven to just keep going and find all the answers and finish it.

I found that I ended up really enjoying Bazaar. Miles Joyner shows a lot of promise with his first novel, and I’m excited to see more from him in the future. It can be a lot of fun to watch an author grow with each novel they write, when you start reading them from the start. I fully expect that Miles’ name will become well-known in the future, as he continues to write.

If you are like me, and new to the techno thriller genre, or even to Miles Joyner’s writing, I encourage you to give it a try. You never know when you will find the one book or author that you end up loving, and wouldn’t have found them without stepping outside of your comfort zone.

Final Thoughts on Bazaar

I am calling Bazaar a four star read. It took some time to get into, but once I did, I really enjoyed it. Will I read more in the techno thriller genre? It isn’t likely for me. While I did enjoy Bazaar, it didn’t inspire me to go read more in the genre. While I love branching out into new genres and styles, I can’t see myself actively looking for this genre in the future.

It is still fun and interesting to try new things, or book genres, in this case. Which I recommend everyone do. I have always found it comforting to stick to my usual genres and favorite authors, but I also always push myself to try new ones at the same time. So if you’re like me, take the time to step out of your comfort zone. It can be a huge confidence booster, and you just might find you enjoy it.

Discussion

Have you read Bazaar from author Miles Joyner? Are you a fan? Do you enjoy crime or techno thriller novels? What are your favorites in the techno thriller genre? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

About the Author

A lifelong fiction writer, Miles turned to penning novels after nearly a decade editing television in the D.C. area for platforms including NBC Sports Washington, theGrio, and the Federal Network. He has had an obsession with the effects technology has on society since being raised by a father who was a computer programmer and a mother who worked as a labor organizer.

He still pursues filmmaking in between books and finds that writing in the technothriller genre only enhances that passion even more. Miles is an active member of International Thriller Writers where his first book, Bazaar, was selected for their Debut Authors Program. He attends monthly meetings for the writers’ group, Novels in Progress DC..

Author Interview

I had the amazing opportunity to visit with Miles Joyner about his writing. I am always grateful when an author will chat with me about their books, writing in general, and so much more. It is always fun for me, like talking to my husband about football or anything that lets me nerd out about something I enjoy.

What sparked your interest in writing? Have you done other writing in the past?

I wrote short stories and a very cheesy novella in middle school, but it was screenwriting for my own films in my 20s where I really started taking writing fiction seriously. Bazaar was my first novel and it’s based on a pilot script I wrote in 2018.

Do you have plans for future books? Anything in-progress? Will there be a sequel to Bazaar?

Bazaar is the first book in a series. The sequel, Shifta, is going through edits. I’m currently writing the first entry of another techno thriller series called Compound while I do some prep for the third Bazaar book. I’m also putting together the audiobook version of Bazaar, (with VO artist Herrick Destin).

Who is your favorite author, and why are they your favorite?

S.A. Cosby is my personal favorite writer. The cinematic action packed feel of his prose with realistic portrayal of social themes convinced me this is an art form that requires most of my attention instead of just a single book and returning to filmmaking.

What are your hobbies outside of writing?

Filmmaking is my passion in addition to writing. Other than that, I like to watch documentaries, read both fiction and non-fiction, play tactical video games, and I am a forever student to the sport/martial art of boxing.

What is your favorite food, or type of food?

Very difficult to pick my favorite food, but I can’t imagine life without some Jamaican oxtail and rice n peas every once in a while. Just don’t ask me to cook it.
