Mountain Man’s Mail Order Runaway
Mountain Man’s Mail Order Runaway is the latest short story to be checked off my to be read list. This is the fifth story in a six part series called Wildwood Valley Brides from author Lilah Hart.
I have been reading the Wildwood Valley Brides series, as this was what introduced me to Lilah Hart’s writing. It is a series I have really enjoyed, and been impatiently waiting for each new story in it to be released.

When I read Mountain Man’s Mail Order Mix Up, the first story in this series, it was a somewhat random find on Amazon, and available on Kindle Unlimited. I was searching for romance stories that could be read in one hour or less, and that was my introduction to Lilah Hart. Since then, I’ve been following along with this specific series, and reading some of her standalone stories at the same time.
Sooner or later, I will have read everything she has written. I like that they are a perfect break from heavier novels and prevent me from falling into a reading slump. I can also read them while standing in line somewhere, as I always take my Kindle with me. The chapters are short, making it almost impossible for them to really be interrupted.

About Wildwood Valley Brides
Welcome to Wildwood Valley, where the mountains are rugged, the men are rough, and the women are…missing.
This quiet mountain town has a problem: too many single ex-Navy SEALs and not a single woman in sight. The guys prefer it that way—until a nosy innkeeper secretly signs them up for a mail-order bride service.
One by one, the brides start arriving—sweet, sassy, wide-eyed women who have no idea just how off-the-grid and alpha their new husbands really are.
The mountain men didn’t ask for wives.
But that won’t stop them from keeping them.
About Mountain Man’s Mail Order Runaway
She ran from a life she never chose and straight into the arms of a man who never expected her. He didn’t ask for a bride, but now that she’s here, he’s never letting her go.
I escaped in the middle of the night with nothing but a fake name, a one-way ticket, and a promise of tacos.
No, seriously—tacos.
I didn’t know who I could trust. I just knew I had to run. From the compound. From the leaders who watched me like I was next. From the life that had already taken too much.
So when a man named Logan said he’d keep me safe, I believed him.
Only… he didn’t send those messages.
He didn’t expect a bride to show up on his doorstep, half-starved and ready to collapse. And he definitely didn’t expect to feel anything when I did.
But I see it now—in the way he looks at me. In the way he holds me like I’m breakable and precious at the same time. He didn’t ask for a wife.
But that won’t stop him from keeping me.
Thoughts on Mountain Man’s Mail Order Runaway
In this story, we meet Finley and Logan. Logan is the standard grumpy mountain man who has no intention of getting married and likes living alone. Finley has escaped a cult, and chosen to become a mail order bride.
It isn’t stated what type of religious cult Finley has escaped, but they live in a compound in Nevada, and only marry within the group. Which screams Mormon, or Fundamentalist Mormon to me. The religious leaders started to notice her when she turned fourteen, and that gave me all kinds of ick vibes. This also brings into question how old she was when she escaped to go and live with Logan. No one in cults like this makes it to eighteen when they become adults before getting married. If we’re being honest here, Finley would be no more than sixteen years old when she escaped.
Please keep in mind that I’ve read Destroying Their God and other books where adults and cult leaders prey on and groom children to abuse them. So the mention of this as Finley’s backstory just doesn’t sit well with me. This is a “me” problem, and not a reflection on Lilah Hart’s writing abilities.
Mountain Man’s Mail Order Runaway gave me a quick read and a happily ever after ending. But a big part of what I’ve always enjoyed about Lilah Hart’s stories is that they are relatable, funny, sexy, and enjoyable. This was sterile in comparison. It was just lacking, and I hate that part. I wanted more. I’m hoping that the next story will give me everything that this one lacks.
Final Thoughts on Mountain Man’s Mail Order Runaway
I’m calling Mountain Man’s Mail Order Runaway a three star read. There wasn’t anything wrong with it, but it wasn’t my favorite. Keep in mind that I’m also comparing it to the previous stories in this series, and this one just fell short for me. Comparing is hard not to do, and I’m absolutely doing it here. After you’ve read the majority of a series, you are going to have favorites, and others just fall flat because of that. I’m very glad Mountain Man’s Mail Order Runaway wasn’t my first Lilah Hart story, because it would likely be my last. In comparison to her other stories, this one really was that bad for me.
I wanted more character development, maybe better written or graphic sex scenes in the story. The whole thing just lacked for me. I went to check out other reviews once I had finished it, and every other review was super positive. I’m the odd duck in the bunch for not enjoying this specific story as much as everyone else.
It still gave me the quick one hour read with a happily ever after ending, and I appreciated that. Which is why I’m not rating it any lower than three stars.
As with every novel and short story that I’m not necessarily a fan of, I always encourage you to go and read it yourself and form your own opinions. This is especially true given the fact that all of the other reviews that have been posted as of now are very positive. You may end up loving Mountain Man’s Mail Order Runaway, and I hope you do.
