Murder at Mosswood Lake

Murder at Mosswood Lake is the latest short story to be checked off my to be read list. If you’ve followed me for any length of time, then you know I love a good short story. Sometimes when my attention span is short, a short story is the perfect thing to make sure that I don’t fall into a reading slump and get stuck there.

This one came just as the weather is finally warming up and it is camping season. This makes it a perfect quick summer read while at the lake or camping.

Is your to be read list ever influenced by your mood? I’ve been reading darker novels like Lights Out lately and just needed a change of pace, which is where this cozy mystery came to be at the top of my to be read list.

Discovering new authors can be a ton of fun. Or it can be a disaster. I’ve had my fair share of both, but that is part of the adventure. It often reminds me of thrift store shopping, where you never know when you’ll find that one hidden gem you need to share with everyone.

About Murder at Mosswood Lake

Peace and quiet? Delaney Moore should’ve read the fine print.

Armed with designer hiking boots and a questionable sense of direction, Delaney heads to Mosswood Camp, an isolated, paddle-in retreat promising “solitude and self-discovery.” But when an obnoxious podcaster turns up dead and the only witness might be a squirrel, Delaney finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery with no cell signal, no escape, and a suspiciously quiet group of campers.

Trapped on the island until help arrives, she’ll need to rely on observation, caffeine, and a deeply buried flair for drama to figure out who is lying, who’s next, and why the camp host is a little too good at handling crime scenes.

Wickedly witty and brimming with cozy suspense, Murder at Mosswood is the first book in the Campfire Crimes Cozy Mystery series. Perfect for fans of snarky sleuths, slow burns, and murder in the great outdoors.

Perfect for readers who love:

  • Cozy mysteries with female amateur sleuths
  • Pacific Northwest wilderness settings
  • Closed-circle whodonits
  • Witty banter and smart humor
  • Strong female leads rediscovering themselves through chaos.

Thoughts on Murder at Mosswood Lake

“We all chuckled awkwardly, because that’s what you do when someone casually predicts a murder in the woods.”

Langley Gray, Murder at Mosswood Lake

Let me start by saying that it takes talent to write a good short story. Anyone can write a full novel, and stretch it into four hundred pages or more blabbering on and on. But to write a good short story that captures everything in a full novel without any filler, that actually takes talent. It has to have enough character development without feeling rushed or like things are being skipped. I loved our main character, and there were just enough other characters to keep things interesting.

The first thing I noticed is that the chapters are short, taking just five minutes each, give or take. When chapters are short, books always read faster. If I am in a reading slump, this is actually really important, because short chapters mean I’ve accomplished something. Feeling that more often through short chapters is important, and an excellent way to stay motivated to continue reading.

This story sucked me in and made me want to continue reading. My husband was building a card deck for a Star Wars game he plays with friends, and using my computer and printer to update things. This was the perfect opportunity for me to sit back and relax and read this story. This made for the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon, in my opinion.

This ended up being exactly what I needed to read today, and I loved it.

Final Thoughts on Murder at Mosswood Lake

“Now I’m trapped with potential murder suspects. Like a wilderness Clue game, but with more granola.”

Langley Gray, Murder at Mosswood Lake

I am calling Murder at Mosswood Lake a five star read. It sucked me in, was fun, it kept me entertained, and I wanted to know what happened. I am excited that there will be more in this series in the future. Impatient though, as I want to read them now.

Prior to reading Murder at Mosswood Lake, I had never heard of Langley Gray. Her name is not familiar to me at all. Now that I’ve had this introduction to her writing, I really need to read more. This is the first review for her stories, but it is nowhere near the last one. There will be a lot more in the future.

I’m so glad that I found such a wonderful cozy mystery author like Langley Gray to read. Her stories are the perfect palate cleanser between other books, and have kept me from falling into a reading slump. I hope her stories do the same for you!

Discussion

Have you read Murder at Mosswood Lake or any other writing from author Langley Gray? Are you a fan? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

About the Author

Langley Gray was squarely the main character of her life as she traveled the world working in fashion, film, and finance until she was lucky enough to share the page with her own male protagonist. Three kids and a house in the suburbs later, she decided to add some adventure back into #thatminivanlife by pursuing her dream of writing fiction.

She draws on her degree in psychology to shape (read: torture) her characters and is a ghostwriter for cozy mysteries and children’s books on the side.

In her spare time, she is intensely interested in all paddle sports and thinks if she drinks just one more cup of coffee, she can solve all of life’s mysteries.
