No One Needs to Know

No One Needs to Know is the latest novel to be checked off my to be read list. I have been in a reading funk lately, and I am so glad to be back enjoying books again! If you’ve ever had this happen, pick up a novel or short story from your favorite author. Then you should be able to get back into reading. I had thoroughly high hopes for this book from author Lindsay Cameron.

About No One Needs to Know

It was all confidential. Right up to the moment when it wasn’t.

UrbanMyth: It was lauded as an alternative to the performative, show-your-best-self platforms—an anonymous discussion board grouped by zip code. The residents of Manhattan’s exclusive Upper East Side disclosed it all, things they would never share with their friends or their spouses: secret bank accounts, steamy affairs, tidbits of juicy gossip.

The same people who, as parents, go to astonishing lengths to ensure that their children gain admission to the most prestigious boarding schools and universities. So when a “hacktivist” group breaks into the forum and exposes the real identity of each poster, the repercussions echo down Park Avenue with a force that none could have anticipated.

And someone ends up dead.

Is the murderer Heather, the outsider who would do anything to get her daughter into the elite’s good graces and into their even better schools? Norah, the high-powered executive failing to balance work with the emotional responsibilities of motherhood? Or Poppy, whose perfect-on-the-outside façade conceals more than her share of secrets?

Each of them has something to hide.

Each of them will do anything to keep secrets hidden.

And each of them just might kill to protect their own.

Thoughts on No One Needs to Know

No One Needs to Know is labeled as a thriller, and sounded like the perfect mystery novel to devour this week. I had really high hopes and expectations going into it, and sadly, this novel just didn’t live up to the hype for me.

There is not a single likable or memorable character in this book for me. Which is a huge problem. I want to be invested in a character, rooting for them, for something to happen, and be excited to read it.

There was no cohesion. I felt like I was trying to follow a squirrel on crack at a rave in this story, and the majority of it was filler. I didn’t love it, and I didn’t hate it. The best word I can describe for it was simply boring. I was bored all the way through this book.

I’m struggling hard to see how this book is labeled as a thriller. I guess if you find unseasoned chicken to be thrilling, then that makes sense. But otherwise it is a stretch.

Final Thoughts on No One Needs to Know

After I finished the book I went to look at reviews to see if I was the odd duck in the group. The reviews are pretty positive for No One Needs to Know. Which is why I would encourage you to go and read it for yourself to form an opinion. Everyone is different, and you may enjoy it far more than I did. I really hope you do!

I really had high expectations going into this novel, and I found it incredibly disappointing that those expectations were not met. I wanted to love this book so much, and I’m kind of annoyed that it didn’t happen. But I also always feel like I’m extra disappointed when I expect to love a book and it doesn’t happen. Do you ever feel that way about a book?
