Enhanced
Enhanced from author Ryan Hyatt is the latest short story to be checked off my list. If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, then you likely know that I’m a big fan of Ryan Hyatt and his writing. He is a repeat author in my blog, and for good reason.
Needless to say, I was pretty excited when I saw that he had released Enhanced. I loved Bob’s Pest Control, so I was naturally curious to see if this short story could top that one, and if I would enjoy it as much.

About Enhanced
ENHANCED: A HOLLYWOOD MURDER MYSTERY is a dystopian tale about an unlikely duo who will leave you grinning and guessing as they come together to investigate a crime.
Thoughts on Enhanced
As you can see from the about Enhanced section, Ryan Hyatt didn’t exactly give anything away on what this story is about. He rarely does. This makes starting any of his stories quite the adventure.
I was certainly curious, as murder mysteries aren’t exactly his usual style. But don’t worry, I wasn’t disappointed by this one.
I’ve been in a little bit of a reading funk lately. The last book I read wasn’t anything close to fabulous, and then I have had Covid for the last eighteen days, and the brain fog and restlessness have been a legit struggle for me. One of the things I’ve learned when things like this happen is to pick up a book from your favorite author. It doesn’t matter who it is. Just pick something up from an author that you know you’ll love, and let that push you past the funk and get back to reading.
One of the things I love about Ryan Hyatt’s writing style is that he writes sci-fi, but in a very “it could totally happen in the not so distant future” kind of way. It just makes sense, and isn’t too far fetched, stupid, or written for shock value.
Enhanced is a story that took a little bit to get into, but it was completely worth it. The ending made me mad that there wasn’t more to this story, and that is a sign of a good quality short story. It should end in a cohesive manner, but also leave the reader wanting more, and feeling like it could be a full novel.
There were a few moments that made me laugh out loud. I’m glad no one was around to see me laughing to myself like a weirdo at 3am. Be prepared for random fits of laughter when reading this! This was a story that was written in true Ryan Hyatt style, and you can tell that if you’ve read any of his other stories. He has definitely developed a signature style over time as he writes.
Final Thoughts on Enhanced
I was kind of surprised that I enjoyed Enhanced as much as I did. Somehow I wasn’t expecting to. I’m not sure if that is simply because Bob’s Pest Control is such a favorite of mine, or simply because I haven’t been feeling well. But I’m always glad when I have the opportunity to pick up a story from a favorite author and get back into reading again. This really made my day.
I highly recommend that you give Enhanced a read. You won’t be disappointed!

About the Author
Ryan Hyatt attributes his passion for writing to an adventurous upbringing and active imagination. He was born in Tucson in 1976. Ryan and his two younger sisters spent childhood living in communities throughout Arizona and California.
He returned to his hometown to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona in 1999. Working as an editor for a defunct horse trade magazine, and then as an auto liability investigator, Ryan sold his car to move to Barcelona, Spain in October 2002, fed up with corporate life.
His experiences culminated in “Friends of the Night,” an unpublished memoir written at age 25. Failing to find a job in Spain, he returned to the United States four months later destitute and despondent because his foreign conquest didn’t last.
Ryan spent the remainder of his twenties moving back and forth between Phoenix and Los Angeles working as a journalist. It was in the throes of his love/hate relationship with conservatism and liberalism, the United States and Europe, Arizona and California, music and monotony, his friends and himself, that Ryan wrote his debut novel. This second edition was reprinted in 2016.
Ryan Hyatt tells stories about your future. He is a former news reporter, columnist, and author of the Terrafide sci-fi series. He edits the satirical sci-fi news site, The La-La Lander, as well as Not Your Father’s Bedtime Stories, kids lit he creates with his daughter, author Sage Hyatt. Find him at the beach and his stories across the internet.
Ryan holds a master’s degree in education from California State University Northridge and develops and manages literacy programs for Los Angeles schools.
