Tainted Harvest is the first in the Simone Doucet series, and I must say that I am looking forward to reading more of this series as it is published. This was a book that captured my attention from the very beginning and kept it all the way to the end.
About Tainted Harvest
She escaped servitude for a worse fate. Now she wants everyone to know what happened.
Travel writer Simone Doucet is searching for a meaningful life, but she hasn’t found a purpose yet. But after she accepts an assignment that takes her to Magnolia Sunrise – a historical bed-and-breakfast on the bluffs of Natchez, Mississippi – strange events begin to take place.
Frightful images of a young slave girl, Delphine, haunt her nights. The first night at the B&B, Simone is transported to 1863, antebellum Natchez. Through spectral eyes, Simone sees Delphine’s history; the horrors she witnessed and was subjected to.
Delphine wants everyone to know what happened to her, and she won’t stop haunting Simone until she tells her story. But why has Delphine chosen Simone, and will this awakening bring new purpose to her life, or open up more untold mysteries to be discovered?
“Below the bluffs of Natchez Trace, the Devil’s Eden lies in waste.”

Thoughts on Tainted Harvest
I thoroughly enjoyed this book because Simone Doucet is a very relatable character. I found myself wanting to see the conclusion. Tainted Harvest is a book that is easy to follow along with and the character development is fast and perfect.
Billups then transports us to Delphine’s story, and the two become intertwined. She is a beautifully tragic character that pulls at my heart strings and makes me feel for her and her story.
I read Tainted Harvest over two days, and I was hooked. The only reason it took me two days is because I was up far past my bedtime the first night reading it and I fell asleep before I could finish it. Books that make me want to keep reading are always my favorite.
Strength and Resiliency
Tainted Harvest is the kind of book that makes me think back on history and the way we’ve treated our fellow humans and the horrors they’ve been through. Yet it goes to show the strength and resiliency that people have, and especially women, in this case. That strength and resiliency is something I think every woman can relate to.
It made me think back to other books I’ve read recently like My Life as a Rat and Unspeakable Things, where there are women going through horrible experiences and have no choice but to be strong and push through it all.
Final Thoughts on Tainted Harvest
Tainted Harvest is only 116 pages, but it doesn’t lack anything. E. Denise Billups does a wonderful job with character development and getting the story told without fillers or irrelevant information, and I appreciate that.
Tainted Harvest is a book that I highly recommend. The book says it is number one in the Simone Doucet series, which gives us a hint that there will be more books coming in the future. I am looking forward to more and will definitely continue reading this series!
Tainted Harvest is the kind of book that you will never forget! Go read it, you will not regret it.
