Uncharted Waters

Uncharted Waters is the first in a six part short story series that I am currently reading. If you know me, you know I love a good short story to read instead of wasting my time mindlessly scrolling through social media.

I had never read anything from Sally Hepworth prior to this, so I knew my introduction to her writing would be an adventure, and I’m so glad I took it!

About Uncharted Waters

“Speak your truth.” An icebreaker leads to unintended consequences for two strangers aboard a luxury yacht in this seductively twisty short story by the New York Times bestselling author of The Good Sister.

When Ella boards a sumptuous charter off the coast of Australia, she feels…dread. Her husband, Mac, the social butterfly who makes these wellness retreats so much easier to navigate, is stuck at work, leaving her exposed to the other passengers. Luckily, she forms an instant bond with the charismatic Chloe, a newly single woman staving a broken heart. But as the friendship grows, Ella discovers they share more than the need for an escape, and their devastating connection has the power to forever alter their lives.

Uncharted Waters by Sally Hepworth is part of Getaway, a collection of six stories about dream escapes that take unimaginable, even sinister, turns. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single sitting.

Thoughts on Uncharted Waters

“Today’s challenge is to use your voice. Speak your truth. Say something out loud that you wouldn’t normally say. Maybe it’s something you’re shy about, or an opinion you don’t usually feel comfortable expressing? Maybe it’s a truth that you’ve been afraid to say out loud.”

Sally Hepworth, Uncharted Waters

I was hooked on the premise of this story from the start and expected great things from it. But I also expect great things from Amazon Original stories anyway, like Evidence of the Affair from Taylor Jenkins Reid.

Despite owning more than one Sally Hepworth novel (I’m looking at The Younger Wife on my shelf as I write this), this was the first of her writing that I’ve read. Although after reading Uncharted Waters, her writing has certainly climbed higher on my to be read list!

I found this an easy to read short story. The plot twists were pretty predictable, but I’m fine with that, as it is a short story and a really enjoyable one. I was looking for something to entertain me, not for the shock value. The character development was just enough to keep my attention but without going over the top and becoming boring.

This was an excellent read right before bed, because the length is perfect, taking me just about an hour to read. If you’ve ever been reading a full novel before bed and playing the “just one more chapter” game and suddenly it is 3am, then you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Final Thoughts on Uncharted Waters

“The thing that makes ethics interesting is that no two individuals see things the same. We all have our own internal barometer of what’s right and wrong.”

If you’ve never read a short story before, this would be an excellent introduction. If you are a lover of short stories already, then you need to be reading this one!

This is the first in a six part series, and I am looking forward to reading the remaining five books. If they’re anything like Uncharted Waters, I’m expecting great things to come! It was the first Sally Hepworth story I’ve read, but it will definitely not be the last.
