About The Ghosts of Thorwald Place

Rachel Drake is on the run from the man who killed her husband. She never leaves her safe haven in an anonymous doorman building, until one night a phone call sends her running. On her way to the garage, she is murdered in the elevator. But her story doesn’t end there.

She finds herself in the afterlife, tethered to her death spot, her reach tied to the adjacent apartments. As she rides the elevator up and down, the lives of the residents intertwine.

Every one of them has a dark secret. An aging trophy wife whose husband strays. A surgeon guarding a locked room. A TV medium who may be a fraud. An ordinary man with a mysterious hobby.

Compelled to spend eternity observing her neighbors, she realizes that any one of them could be her killer.

Thoughts on The Ghosts of Thorwald Place

Rachel Drake has the misfortune of being murdered by an unknown assailant, but she’s even more unfortunate that her murder took place in an elevator. For you see, when her spirit “wakes up” after the murder, she is trapped within a somewhat spherical bubble surrounding the murder site. As the elevator goes up or down, so does her prison.

Rachel can venture a short distance from the elevator, but her exploration area is at the mercy of anyone who uses it. It seems that every time Rachel comes close to uncovering a secret, the elevator cruelly carries her away as an unwitting resident heads off to work or comes home.

She comes to be familiar with those who live in the apartments closest to the elevator, and learns more about their lives than she ever did while she was alive. They all harbor their own secrets, many of whom have a part to play in unveiling the mystery behind Rachel’s death, and that of her husband.

There’s an abused pregnant housewife, a widow in mourning, a Goth teenager obsessed with death, a precocious child, and a helpful doorman who’s more than he seems. And as it turns out, Rachel is not the only ghost in the building.

It is with this ingenious premise that The Ghosts of Thorwald Place became one of the most compelling murder mysteries I have ever read. Having it be told exclusively from the perspective of the victim as she watches the investigation unfold was, simply put, amazing.

I would love to tell you more about The Ghosts of Thorwald Place, because it is just that great of a novel. However, that would spoil it all. Instead, I’m just going to tell you that this is a novel you will definitely want to read!

Final Thoughts on The Ghosts of Thorwald Place

With a mystery that remained unsolved until the final pages, The Ghosts of Thorwald Place was an exciting story to read. Everyone in the building remained a suspect until the very end. Even when certain mysteries were solved, because this was all told from Rachel’s point of view, there was still doubt about whether the solution was genuine or not.

There were numerous chill-inducing scenes that literally gave me goosebumps as I read them. I found myself jumping at shadows and reacting to any creaks in my own house.

If you enjoy supernatural thrillers like The Sixth Sense, The Ghosts of Thorwald Place will be a real page-turner for you.
