The Harvest

The Harvest is the latest short story to be checked off my to be read list. I have been an avid fan of Ryan Hyatt for several years now, and I’m always impatiently waiting for him to publish something new so that I can read it.

Needless to say, I was super excited to read The Harvest when I noticed it available this morning.

This will make the eleventh story I’ve read from him, and one from his daughter, Sage as well. It has long been a goal of mine to read everything Ryan writes, and see where the next adventure will take me, because all of his stories are an interesting adventure. You never know what you’re going to get with his stories, or where the twists will take you.

I will also tell you that Ryan Hyatt is the first author who got me to enjoy science fiction stories. That has always been a favorite for my husband, but never a genre I enjoyed. Until Ryan came along. In fact we were just talking about that the other day, and how our reading taste tends to differ so much.

This is part of the fun for me. The descriptions of his stories never give anything away, so there is no way to know until you just dive in and start reading.

Have you read The Harvest? Come on in and let me tell you about it!

About The Harvest

Dr. Deidra Cranston’s life takes a turn for the worse when a ride in a driverless car leads to a destination that forces her to question the value of her existence.

Thoughts on The Harvest

The Harvest is a short story, at a whopping eighteen pages, but it really is packed with a ton of information, things going on, character development, and emotions.

Ryan Hyatt likes to go off into left field with his stories and the things that happen in them. What I love about them is the fact it is just far enough off into left field that I can see them actually happening.

Think about taking an Uber somewhere, but with an AI driver, and then they take you somewhere totally different than your original destination. You’ve basically been kidnapped, as you cannot escape the car.

Where are you going? What do you even do in this situation? Is help available?

I’m not even going to lie when I say that this is how nightmares start. When something that is designed to keep you safe, meaning the driverless car, turns into the thing holding you captive instead. This certainly makes me think about it. I know AI things like a driverless car are designed to stop car wrecks from happening, but is it possible to take over control of it for nefarious purposes?

This story made me think about those possibilities. It also made me wonder how I would handle it if it were happening to me. Being a prepper, my mind wandered to multiple options and possible scenarios.

I also like how the ending was a happy ending. I’m always after a good ending, and this story delivered on it.

Final Thoughts on The Harvest

I’m calling The Harvest a five star read. I really enjoyed it, and I will read it again. It is so unbelievably hard not to tell you more about the story because I will spoil the entire thing, and that defeats the purpose. So I’m just going to tell you to go and read it. Trust me when I say that you won’t be disappointed.

This is a story that could easily become a full novel, yet it feels complete with the length it is now. This is a sign of a good author, when the reader wants more, but it doesn’t feel incomplete.
